Caving in Ohio’s Hocking Hills

Does it seem to anyone else that fall just came and went before we had time to enjoy it? In Tennessee at least, the leaves didn’t change until late October, then we had a cold snap and all of a sudden it’s winter. Where did autumn go?

I feel like fall was stolen from us, so I’m glad I got a quick weekend among the forest of Hocking Hills for Layne and Brian’s wedding to at least get a small dose of my favorite season.

While we were staying at our cozy cabin in the woods and the girls were holed up sipping on bourbon, the bros went down the road to Ash Cave, where there was another wedding going on.

Ash Cave in Hocking Hills, OhioWhat a great spot for a wedding, am I right? Though I’m not so sure I’d want strangers poking around there as uninvited guests while I said my vows.

Ash is more of an overhang than an actual cave; it’s a pretty easy walk but there’s no railing or warnings up top so keep your kids and your dogs close.

The walk is a relatively easy one if you’re traveling with people who are elderly or have limited mobility.

It’s definitely not the only cave in the Hocking Hills area—Old Man’s Cave is the more well-known one, but overrun with visitors at all times, which quickly deterred us from checking it out—but one of the most accessible.

So long, fall. You were great while you lasted. Come back again and stay longer next time, will ya?

Think maybe fall happened while you were busy. This enticing spot reminds me of Starve Rock State Park in IL with the bluffs, falls and forest. FL must feel like summer again.

That “cave” does look like a neat spot for a wedding, but I’d have to agree with you about it being so open to the public! Hocking Hills is only a couple hours away from me, yet I’ve never been. I miss fall already!

When I lived in that area, Old Man’s Cave was one of our favorite spots to visit. Exploring the cave’s around that area kept me pretty busy when I was a kid and it’s just so, so pretty up there in the woods. I miss it a lot sometimes.
