The whole four days we were in Shanghai, a curtain of cold and gloom hung heavy over the city in an ominous sort of manner.
But at night, it was a different story.
This fog only served to enhance the skyline lit up along the Bund and over the water in Pudong.
We snuck up to the 9th level of the Fairmont Peace Hotel where there’s an outside deck reserved for private functions and admired the city in her nighttime glow.

Shanghai may not have been my favorite place we visited on the voyage—though the Peace Hotel definitely ranks up there in terms of loveliest hotels I’ve ever stayed in—but seeing it at dark gave me the impression I ought to reconsider.
WOW!!
The night’s lights totally change the look and feel of the city.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
And to you, Gaelyn!
Wow, what a difference between night and day. Great photos! Makes me want to spend a couple nights there looking around.
Truth be told, we didn’t find a whole lot to do in Shanghai itself, but I loved that hotel so much, I really didn’t mind admiring the city from within its confines!
gorgeous night photos + clear cut quality. hands down! bravo! ;-)))
Thanks, my friend!
Beautiful photos, I am deeply impressed. Night photos very often turn out in a blur. Yours are perfect. The skyline looks a tiny bit like Hong Kong, but I am sure there is a lot of diffference between the two cities
Thanks!
Lovely photos, I’m really impressed too. Anytime I’ve tried to take similar ones they never come out right! Still trying to figure out the right aperture/shutterspeed etc but I think you’d done it perfectly. I’m not a huge fan of cities (well apart from the shopping!) until the sun goes down and the lights come on.
Thanks, Tracy! We usually use the tripod for night shots but didn’t take it with us this trip, so we tried balancing the camera on the rail to keep it steady.
I have stayed in the Peace Hotel too!
We seem to have similar taste–both in hotels and in literature =)
Despite the rain the pics are gorgeous! But what a shame it rained, because Shanghai is such a great city to just walk and walk in.
Well, we still managed to walk and walk…through the fake market…and buy and buy while at it =)
Ah-maze-ing! What a difference night time makes. I heard the days in Shanghai can be polluted and congested – not a very pleasing environment. But at night, this all changes. Reminds me of the neon lights of Hong Kong.
You know, I hadn’t heard that about Shanghai, so maybe the “clouds” during the off-time it wasn’t raining–as well as the “fog” at night–were actually smog instead!
Great shots…I absolutely love skylines and city lights at night! I would totally be one to sneak up to the roof, too!
It’s funny, Vegas is one of my least favorite cities, and yet I love seeing skylines illuminated at night by bright lights, such as in Shanghai. Go figure!
Beautiful night shots! It’s amazing how a city is transformed at night. I particularly like those lit up boats on the harbor. Happy New Year!
Thanks, Mary! It’s also amazing how–under the right conditions–smog can make a city look pretty =)
China’s tourism would jump if they’d take care of the smog!
And if they were a bit nicer… 😮
Wow, just found your blog. Amazing photos of Shanghai. I’m a huge fan of night photography especially. Been on my list of places to go.
We love night photography, too! The conundrum is that we usually don’t want to tote around a heavy tripod with us; in this case, the bannister was high enough to balance the camera on it.
Wow, sick pics!
I’m going to Shanghai in a week, and these photos made me more excited than anything else has yet! Thanks for sharing!
Have a nice trip! And definitely hit up the Fairmont Peace Hotel for afternoon tea if you have some free time. SO GOOD.
Thanks for the tip. I LOVE afternoon tea so I’ll definitely hit that up.
Great photos! I have not been to Shanghai yet, but is a city that I definitely want to visit this year.
Such good pictures. While doing volunteer abroad work, I traveled all over China. Such a beautiful country. 🙂
