I had been to Greece once before. In 2006, my former flatmate Jo from my Edinburgh days found a killer deal to Kos for 10 days. So we went, and we explored the surrounding islands and even hopped over into Turkey.
That was a long time ago, and I was probably most excited to make it back to Greece on our most recent cruise, even if just for a day. Unfortunately, while pretty, Corfu does not summon the same idyllic coastal feel that other islands like Santorini and Patmos do.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s prettyβand us Lunas have fun no matter where we are or what we’re doingβI just wasn’t expecting the Old Town to be so developed.
In truth, we had been hoping to spend the day bumming around the beaches, particularly Kassiopi, but we were unsuccessful in finding a car rental for the day, and all the ferries that transported tourists to the island’s hotspots had long departed by the time we pulled into town at 10am.
We bought souvenirs and we ate tzatziki and we finished the afternoon with gelato because, hello, it was a day of the week that ended in a “y.”
From what the Internet tells me, Corfu does have a number of pretty beachesβwe just simply couldn’t find them, nor are they easy to reach if you’re in Corfu town and have no form of transportation beyond your own two feet handy.
Still, it was a relatively relaxing day, beaches or not, and our Fitbit told us we logged more than 10 miles.
Moral of this story: If you’re going on a cruise, docking in Corfu, and want to do more than simply lap the town three times as we did? Plan in advance. Book a tour. I don’t really believe in going on cruise excursions, but this might have been the one time I should have gone against the grain.
Do you like your Fitbit? I’ve been thinking about getting one.
I can answer that for her…
Her fabulous Mom (me) gave her one for her 30th birthday 18 months ago. She has yet to even set it up. So don’t listen to her.
I, on the other hand, have used mine religiously for 2 years and love it. It logged ALL of our steps, stairs, and energy expended on our 3 week trip this year (and one month last year) and it’s cool to see how much we walked! (Like in Barcelona…88 flights of steps in one day). You’ll love it!
Haha thanks for the info! I’m surprised to hear Kristin hasn’t set hers up yet! π
Don’t listen to her, Briel! I set mine up (finally) in January, used it every day for a month, then it all of a sudden went blank. It registered all zeros and no amount of walking/climbing/moving would make the numbers moved. So my MOTHER took it and said she was going to send it back to get a replacement and then promptly lost it =(
LOL You guys are making me laugh. Sorry to hear yours stopped working and was lost Kristin! π
The pastel-colored buildings are so pretty! But yeah, lapping the town a few times could have probably been a bit better with a beach trip included π
When does a trip to the beach NOT improve a situation??
Amazing photos! Love Greece, it is really a beautiful country, and the beaches are just wonderful.. π
What’s your favorite Greek isle? I’ve only been to Kos and Patmos, aside from Corfu!
It’s a shame you couldn’t make it to a beach, but I have to admit I don’t really feel that bad for you when I look at these gorgeous photos! Looks like you still had a pretty nice experience!
Ha! I know, right? Funny, how a place can just be so-so, but the photos make it look more than that π
Without Beach celebration i thought journey is uncompleted Greece is Beautiful place people are really comparative. i suggest you Michigan Travel its one of the lovely State of USA
Look at those Corfu pics! I’ve been there too and they could be mine perfectly (except for the one with the bird, hahaha!). I hope you had a lovely experience there, like I did (:
What did you do in Corfu that you loved? I need a backup plan should I find myself there again!
Amazing photo shoot, Really crystal photo, I bookmark to my list.
This place looks amazing, so different than most of the other sea destinations in Greece, where there is one street parallel with the beach and no place to see except for the beach.
Corfu looks lovely. Didn’t manage to visit it during my Greece trip, but these pictures… <3
I adored Corfu as well. We made it to the beaches which were a 30 minute drive from the town! It’s quite the journey to make it there, and the town is such a cute place to just lounge about! Where else in Greece did you go?
Very beautiful. Corfu reminds me Italy…..
Corfu is a very beautiful island. I have been there several years ago and I still have very vivid memories. I remember the northern town of Roda and of course the majestic city of Corfu. Thanks for sharing a wonderful post.
If you ever go back to Greece, look up a place called Parga. What a fantastic little find. Most people we met & talked to had been back quite a few times (incl one couple for 40yrs!).
