The first couple days we were on board the Star Clipper, my monkey of a husband had an overwhelming desire to scamper up to the crow’s nest—particularly when he saw the crew doing just that. I brushed it off, as he often schemes, and figured he wouldn’t have the chance. And then, one day, an announcement over the ship’s loudspeaker beckoned any of us wanting an aerial view of the Caribbean to report to the upper deck.

I thought, surely for liability reasons, they aren’t actually allowing us to climb that thing. But oh yes, they were.

It will come as no surprise to you that SVV wasted no time jumping to the front of the line and getting clipped in by Chris, our intrepid dive master who showed us underwater Dominica.

SVV has always loved to climbed things. When we took one of our first trips together around Denmark, he pulled himself up to the top of the rafters in an old church. When he worked as a painting contractor, he constantly could be found dangling dangerously from some super-high scaffolding. So this was right up his alley.

Once he reached the nest, Ellen—our intrepid Swedish boat driver who taught me to water ski in Guadeloupe—let him chill out up there with her for a good while before he came back down. But it was quite some time before I was able to make the climb myself, not out of fear mind you, but because a bunch of older, eager men jumped ahead of me in line (jerks).

But eventually I got my turn, too.

I’m not scared of heights, and so this climb was quite the breeze. I was worried my clumsiness might result in a slip, but not so much as a falter (and I was very happy that I had packed a pair of TOMS for a change, as flip-flops would have kept me grounded, quite literally). I scurried up the rope and enjoyed my own time in the nest. Too bad we weren’t able to go up to the level above this one—that would have been even more amazing!

Totally worth it.

Would you have made the climb up to the Star Clipper’s crow’s nest?

That looks amazing. OMG reading travel and adventure blogs is getting me all psyched up. Had a quarter life crisis, quit the job, no plan = one way ticket to Hawaii.

    Thanks for the awesome pictures!

How cool! You’re like a pirate. 🙂 I would be terrified as I’m scared of heights, but I’d still to do it!

How much fun! I love these pics!!! My hubby would have totally done this and then would have proceeded to not let me I’m sure haha.

Wow, what a cool view from up there! Heights sometimes weird me out, but it’d be worth it for that photo op!

It didn’t feel too high up while we were doing it, but these photos prove to me it was taller than it seemed in the moment!

    Briel K.

I would have been right at the front of the line too. FUN! 🙂

      And that’s my you’re my #1!

  • February 6, 2013

I done this and it is so much fun. So is swinging from the side on a rope into the water (when the boat is NOT moving!)

Dude, I need to travel with you!

There’s not even a small chance. I’m terrified of heights, but I was convinced to go rappelling in Belize once. Not sure if that lapse in judgement was me succumbing to peer pressure or my competitive nature taking over.

That place looks amazing. Can’t wait to visit there. 🙂

Yes! I would have done it but it wouldn’t have been as easy for me. I’m not very scared of heights but that little rope ladder looks precarious and I completely failed the rope climb in gym class!

It was more stable than it seemed! That was my one worry at first, slipping given my propensity for klutziness, and no trouble at all.

    Haidang

This is amazing! And i know you love your heights/jumping 😉

    • February 10, 2013

The only thing better would have been if they would have put me on a bungy and let me JUMP back down to the deck!

  • February 8, 2013

So neat! I’m mildly terrified of heights, but for the view, I think it would be worth it.

    • February 10, 2013

But but but…you go up in helicopters! This would be a breeze!

  • February 8, 2013

I’d like to think I would do it as it looks like it would provide amazing views …. but, I have a bit of a heights issue. Actually, I like to tell people that I’m not afraid of heights, I’m afraid of falling.

Glad you and SVV got to experience it though 🙂

Mayhem would probably beat you up the ladder, and then you’d find yourself chasing her up there anyway instead of standing at the bottom contemplating whether you could hack it!

  • February 9, 2013

Looks quite scary to me though the views from up there would be something to savor. Beautiful.

  • February 12, 2013

    It Seems Really nice.I would love to try it… 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I would be a shaking wreck if I tried to go up there. And coming back down would be even worse…
