I’ve long dreamed of going to Estonia, ever since I first knew it was a country some 15 years ago (I was a geography whiz kid, it may come as no surprise). Don’t ask me how or why, I just knew I wanted to someday visit.

Tallinn, EstoniaIt has this whole Eastern Europe romanticism about it, and prior to my arrival, the furthest east I’d been on the continent was Romania. Just one step closer to Russia, kids.

Tallinn, EstoniaTallinn’s architecture, which I found the most fascinating facet by far, is an interesting fusion of medieval remnants, communist buildings and modern Scandinavian design. It had me at medieval.

Tallinn, EstoniaIt had gorgeous churches…

Tallinn, Estonia…castle-like facades (that were probably no more than apartments, but who cares?)…

Tallinn, Estonia…spectacular town squares…

Tallinn, Estonia…beaches and the Baltic Sea.

Tallinn, EstoniaI don’t think it comes as any surprise as, fairytale-lover and romantic that I am, I spent the majority of my days in the Old Town.

Tallinn, EstoniaI feel like building shots never come out quite that interesting, but I don’t care: I walked around for hours snapping shots of the structures anyhow.

Tallinn, EstoniaI’m not sure I’ve been anywhere lovelier, as far as cities go. And, well, I’ve seen my share of cities in my day.

Tallinn, Estonia

I’ve seen some blogs who have posted Tallinn photos, but none captured the drama and grandeur of those pastel dollhouses like you did!

By the way, I gave you a cheese(y) award at my blog–haha. Thanks for making look busy and making me laugh out loud at work!

How quaint and adorable! I didn’t even know that Estonia was a country, but now it’s getting added to my “Someday List.” Thanks for sharing all of your adventures!

It’s totally gorgeous! Actually, it doesn’t even look real:) I’m originally from Russia and Estonia was one of those places you didn’t talk too much about before communism fell.

I love old architecture like this…far older than we see here in the States! Thanks for sharing your shots!

Estonian architecture looks very similar to Polish minus our abundance of Gothic. If you ever go to Poland, I think you’ll like it!

  • June 12, 2009

Lovely pictures! Must add it to my list 🙂

Great town. I love shooting architecture whether old or new. I do admit that the really old stuff and the stuff from the 1920s attracts me the most.

Ohmigosh, that night shot. It is BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for pointing out to me what I’d heretofore completely failed to realize . . . . I TOTALLY HAVE TO GO TO ESTONIA!

  • June 12, 2009

The colours and structures make it look so theatrical! I especially love the last pic, it almost looks like a little figurine town!

love the pictures of talinn. have wanted to travel there for years and your pics only fueled that desire. may bite the bullet and sign up for that city’s marathon next year. thanks for the inspiration!

Those lovely spires are forever piercing the skies.

It looks like you were in Tallinn at a prettier time of year than I was last year (in April)! I absolutely loved that city but it was a lot grayer, colder, and rainier then so I had to limit my time outdoors. I’m impressed that you’ve known about Estonia since you were a kid; I didn’t know that it was a country until I read an article about it in Travel & Leisure when I was in college but after reading that story I really wanted to go 🙂

You know, all I can think about when I hear ‘Estonia’ is Skype. That’s where they’re from, all those guys. Apparently it’s completely revitalized the economy of Estonia.

I’m really impressed with how CLEAN it all looks in those pictures.

    gorgeous, as usual.

Wow, I almost didn’t recognize it without any snow! Last November, on my way to Russia, I visited Tallinn during a terrible blizzard. It was a gorgeous city despite the weather. I am definitely planning on going back to experience it under better conditions. I hope my photos turn out half as good as yours.

  • June 15, 2009

Wow. That place is every bit as charming as you promised it would be.

  • June 17, 2009
