Before there was the University of Tennessee, there was Sewanee. There’s no denying it’s one of the prettiest places in Tennessee.
Or the country, rather.
What other college campus has a dining hall that looks like this?
(Also referred to as Phallic Palace, with good reason.)
And as Gothic architecture like this around every corner?
A well-behaved parrot guarding the courtyard.
And a cross perched on a hillside that quite literally feels omnipresent?
The grand ol’ University of the South.
While I loved my two years there, ultimately, it was just way too small for me—a sprawling 40,000 acres, but just 1,400 students, or the size of my high school. And way too close to home.
yay! lovely photos, I sure do miss Sewanee sometimes.
Beautiful photos, studying there must be really peaceful! I love the shot of the colourful parrot guarding the courtyard and the grand dining hall in the background.
Wow! So beautiful! And this is in Tennessee? 🙂
Excellent photos of Sewanee.

I really enjoyed your photos.
Way to represent the Good ‘Ol South! 🙂
Holy crap…is that a REAL bird?
The University of the South! My friend went to school here and talks about how much he loved it and how beautiful it was. He was right!
Beautiful!
That’s how I feel about Santa Cruz. I came *this* close to going there, but I just couldn’t bite the bullet. I’m glad, I love where I went and I met Mike there, but Santa Cruz will ALWAYS be special to me.
I’ve been meaning to write… my god, they almost won that game! I was cheering for you the entire way.
Very imposing all those grand buildings, I guess someone with some money wanted to be remembered.
Stunning, including the parrot.
Funny story with the parrot. A guy was standing there snapping pics with his point-n-shoot and talking to this massive bird as we were leaving. According to dude, he was being featured in Rolling Stone magazine after being seen at a concert. I was like, “cool, can I take some pictures?” HUGE bird.
Beautiful campus! I love visiting old campuses and taking photos. The architecture is sometimes so amazing…and then there are the characters that often populate campus 🙂
I’ve always been fascinated by Sewanee. Solely because of the name.
It looks like it could be somewhere in Europe.
I would say even somewhere in the United Kingdom
