Hawaii, Family Style: The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

As much as we would have preferred not to, we eventually had to leave the Fairmont Orchid. Luckily, it was only to go down the highway to Kohala Coast’s Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

While not as luxurious as the Orchid, the Prince caters more toward families. Rooms were definitely more modest—i.e. basic, no frills—but clean with big bathrooms, and there was a lot of communal space for kids to run around and play.

Plus, the pool area wasn’t shabby either.

Like everywhere we went on the Big Island, the grounds were impeccably manicured. The grass looked like one big, too-perfect-to-be-real carpet, and I was a big fan of all the bougainvillea and other colorful flowers.

However, the main reason to come to the Prince is for the beach. The Big Island is known for volcanoes and rocky terrain; long sandy beaches aren’t really its thing.

Except on Hapuna. It’s the resort with the longest beach on the Kohala Coast; plus, half of it is open to the public.

Funny enough, we actually came here to body surf on our last trip to the Big Island four-and-a-half years ago!

This time around, we skipped the water sports and SVV went out on the beach and chose to perform a show tune instead.

Kidding—that’s actually my thing, not his—but isn’t that totally what it looks like? Rather, this was the aftermath of him trying to beat me at my own game: jumping. As if he ever stood a chance.

Don’t mess with the former basketball player. I was known for my rebounding skills, after all. A dancer, on the other hand, I was not, am not.

I’m sorry but, to me, jumping photos will never get old.

I think one day you might need to do a photo book or tumblr or something of all your jumping photos 🙂

I’ve never been to Hawaii, but my impression is always one of perfectly manicured landscapes. Looks beautiful.

That is an excellent idea! I like to think every time I jump that Pat’s in my head yelling: “GO HIGHER! You can get at least another foot of air, you wimp!”

You guys are beyond adorable. Seriously. And yet, somehow, instead of wanting to vomit on your faces, I want to be you. It’s all very confusing.

Hawaii looks lovely, but it was the fourth picture that really sold it for me. The picture looks so warm that I actually held my hand up to my laptop screen to see if it was radiating heat. (It is not.) So beautiful!

I don’t know what to say to that, other than thanks =)

It’s a shame it’s such a long trip from Hawaii to the East Coast (I’d almost say go to the Caribbean instead)…I mean, it’s only a five-hour flight for us and it took four years to make it back that way!

      Best. Comment. Ever.

When you are on a beach as gorgeous as that, I don’t know that there IS any other way to react than some major jumping.

Also, these pictures make me want to hop a plane back to Hawaii STAT.

I think I could deal with that resort! Haha. I don’t know why the hubs and I don’t take more frolicking on the beach shots! : )

I LOVED Hapuna Beach! It was such a nice break from the black lava rock ones we’d been at all week. 🙂 A few years ago while I was on the Big Island we went exploring for this hidden, unmarked, unlit lava tube. It was perhaps the coolest thing about the whole trip! Directions were something like “inbetween mile marker 7 and 8, on the ocean-side of the road, about 100 yards in is what looks like a little cave. It’s a lava tube. Climb down in there and enjoy. Oh, and ignore the barking dogs, you aren’t on their property and they are (usually) restrained.”

    It was AWESOME!

We actually went spelunking in some lava tubes on private property! In my normal fashion, I hit my head…twice…and cracked it open on the ceiling, HA.

I’m sure you noticed it (and probably even planned for it) but I am in love with your reflection in the water as you jump. It adds a great dimension.

Ha, I neither planned for it nor noticed–you clearly have a keener eye than I do, Jessica =) Though my husband took the photos (obviously) so maybe he did!

You guys are adorable. I don’t think I have your kind of energy any more ( . . . maybe on a beautiful beach like that, I would!)

Hapuna Beach is beautiful. Love my time there and would definitely go back.

I think a book of your jumping pictures would be a great thing!

  • April 22, 2011

I love the way you jump. Must have been a great basketball player. I’m going to have to try more of that.
