Meet Meads Bay: The Dazzling Coast of Anguilla

We haven’t had much of a winter here in Tennessee—until these past two weeks when the thermometer dropped drastically from 70 to 30 and we woke up on the day after Christmas to a light dusting of snow on the ground (or a “blizzard” by Southern standards). And right now, I would give anything to be back where I was exactly a month ago: working on my tan on the lovely Caribbean island of Anguilla.

Since the first week aboard the Star Clipper was a paid-for work trip for me through my travel agency, we splurged on two nights post-cruise and stayed at a property I’ve always wanted to experience: the Viceroy Anguilla. Because sometimes luxury is just worth the price tag.

We did a whole lot of nothing while there. Some walking on the beach, a little diving and plenty of sunbathing.

And some mingling with the local yokels.

Luckily, we are just the kind of guests to whom the Viceroy caters.

Anguilla might tie the Bahamas as my new favorite Caribbean vacation spot. It was exactly the right mix of relaxation and beauty.

What’s your favorite tropical escape? Have you ever stayed at a Viceroy resort before?

That water is gorgeous, it looks like you had an amazing time. My favorite beach vacation was probably Sardinia, but anywhere any the Caribbean is also great!

    • December 29, 2012

SVV lived in Sicily for three years and never made it to Sardinia! I was in Corsica for a couple weeks on a reporting assignment many years ago and was so tempted to try to tack on a few days in Sardinia. It sounds lovely.

It looks so beautiful!!! Viceroy hotels are great!! I’ve only stayed at the viceroy Miami but I want to stay at all of them!

    • December 29, 2012

And I would like to go to the Miami one! The only hotel I’ve stayed at in Miami is the Raleigh, which was super awesome as I was working for Glamour at the time and they put us all up in corner suites!

Do you know, I have only been to one Caribbean spot, which was St. Croix, this past spring. It was loverly, and it definitely made me want to go back and visit more islands!

    • December 29, 2012

That’s one I haven’t visited! So far in the Caribbean, I have tackled the Bahamas multiple times, the Caymans, Roatan (in Honduras) twice, Bonaire, Barbados, Anguilla, St. Maarten (blech), Guadelupe, Iles des Saintes, Antigua, Nevis, St. Barths and Dominica. I’d recommend any of them except St. Maarten (though it is a cheap airport to fly in and out of).

Swede and I have a friend from Guadalupe–I hear it’s simply gorgeous!

  • December 29, 2012

Whoaaa Im loving those night photographs! How did you manage that? Such a cool effect! 😀 And Anguilla does look beautiful. I’ve only been to Dominican Republic and it was for work so I didn’t really see much as I was on the resort full-time.

Ideally, I would have had a tripod. But I didn’t want to haul it around for 10 days, so I balanced the camera on a rock and did a really long exposure (around 30 seconds I believe). This is tough when you have a live subject as the subject can never stay perfectly still (plus, the wind and trees move), so there is a little blur but I love this picture nonetheless.

    Great photos…Thanks for sharing… Have a great day…

What I would do now to swap a dollop of white snow for a little white sand! Roll on the travels…! X

  • December 31, 2012

I haven’t heard much about Anguilla. Now I’m intrigued. Doing nothing sounds perfect right now.

    • January 11, 2013

I know, right? You don’t hear much about it, though I often seen the Viceroy, Cuisinart or Cap Juluca (the only three big resorts on the island) on Jetsetter, etc. There’s not a whole lot to do there besides diving and, uh, doing nothing. Which is my kind of island! We loved it.

Jumping picture = Klassic Karibbean KL. Much love to this!

Night Photo with Stars on Beach = uhhh…woah. You just took beach photos to the next level AMEN to that!

    • January 11, 2013

Thank you, friend! Next time, I hope to have a tripod handy but I made due with what we had (namely, a rock!).

Your ability to capture beauty in its integrity could be done sans rock or con iPhone I have absolutely no doubt. Cheers to 2013. Lots of exciting things coming, I can feel it! Relish each moment KL!

im going there next month with my gf 😀

    • January 11, 2013

That sounds awesome–and romantic. Where are y’all staying? The Viceroy?

  • January 2, 2013

Great pics…I’d love to be on a hot beach right now. Stupid snow….

  • January 3, 2013

Anguilla is my favorite spot on earth. We went there for vacation in 2011 and loved it so much that we returned in Nov. 2012. I am already hoping we make it back again in 2013.

I hope you had a chance to try a few of the restaurants down there. Some of the food at those places is crazy good!

    • January 11, 2013

Megan, we actually only ate at one beachside restaurant (which was delicious) and then had the rest of our meals at the Viceroy, mainly because we were lazy and didn’t have a rental car. But I’d love to return and explore the island more, particularly the dive scene.

Your post made me so excited to return to Anguilla. By far one of the most beautiful places on earth and provides the perfect mix of seclusion, privacy, and fun. I have had the opportunity to vacation on the island multiple times and each time I come home to AR ready to plan my next trip. I hope you had the chance to explore or consider staying at cap juluca and/or cuisinart resort. I think the best beach in Anguilla is Rendevous bay. You can walk past cuisinart resort, Anguilla great house, and finish your night With Bankie Banx at the dune preserve. Also check out Elvis’s beach bar near the Pump House in sandy ground.

    • January 11, 2013

I definitely would love to stay at the Cuisinart Resort sometime (or Cap Juluca, OF COURSE). Then again, the Viceroy was so perfect and relaxing, I’d have a hard time not staying there! I think those are the only three luxury resorts on the island, right? Regardless, we hope to get back in the next few years and spend more time diving Anguilla.

I would agree with you that those are the three big ones. However, my goal is to get a group to go and rent a house so we can dive and cook. If you do stay at cuisinart and want to play low key for lunch one day walk down to the Great House for a pizza and rum punch or carib, or head down to bankie’s place for an out of body experience or great people watching. How would you rate VIceroy? I hope you head back soon. By the way I love your posts but it is making me itch to get out of Scotland and head to warmer weather!!

        • February 7, 2013

I would rate Viceroy a 10 out of 10. I really loved the place. So peaceful, fantastic accommodations, great resort amenities and location. But when traveling with friends, I’m very much a proponent of renting a house when possible (I’m doing that in the North Carolina mountains next week with my group of Virginia pals).

Ahhh but I love me some Scotland! You live in the most gorgeous country on the planet (though, yes, it would be too cold for me to live there permanently!).

  • January 9, 2013

Stunning! I just got back from Vieques (off the coast of puerto rico) and I can’t wait to go back to somewhere warm and sunny!!

    • January 11, 2013

Where did you stay there? I’ve been dying to go to the W Vieques. My travel agency is actually taking a trip there next week, but sadly I won’t be joining them…this time.

I can understand why you’d want to be back in Anguilla, rather than dealing with the snowstorms of Tennessee. I know which one I find most appealing.

    • January 11, 2013

And now it’s 70 in Tennessee in January, so I can’t complain, ha! I just wish it would stop drizzling…

  • January 11, 2013

That pic of you jumping nearby the shore is quite impressive! By the way the night view nearby the water is breathtaking, and what’s the name of that organism nearby the lens cap of your Canon camera? Thanks for the sharing of the pictures!

    • January 11, 2013

It’s actually just a baby lizard that had just been born that night! Crazy, huh?

  • February 7, 2013

    Awesome photos! Thanks for sharing.

  • February 7, 2013

I love Anguilla! Thanks for taking the time to share your photos–they’re really quite terrific.
