Adventure in the Caribbean: What to Do on Grenada

An Appetite for Adventure: What to Do on Grenada

You guys may have gathered over the years that I’m mildly adventurous. Jump out of a plane, go diving with sharks sans cage, fling myself into a ravine with just a bungy cord keeping me alive? Sure, why not!

Adventure in the Caribbean: What to Do on Grenada

Grenada was full of soft adventure, and thus it was perfect for me and my posse of travelers, ranging in age and adventure level. The interior of the island is awash in greenery, thick vegetation that grows over the roads and provides the setting for ample adventures, from waterfall hikes to tubing down rivers.

Here are a few activities you shouldn’t pass up:

Waterfalls

Let’s be upfront here: You need a really damn good guide to get you to many of the Instagrammable spots you see of Grenada online; a print map simply won’t help, and Google Maps is pretty useless on the island. Luckily, we had three natives to show us the ropes, so when we got to a spot on the road with a hand-painted sign of Mount Carmel, they knew to pull over and park.

A guide came running out and said he’d take us down; for $5, we said “why not?” It was, in reality, only 7 minutes or so from the main road, but honestly we as a American tourists would have had no idea how to get down to this waterfall on our own, accessible as it might have been.

Yoga

OK, so we did this on our own rather than with a company, but the great thing about a skill like yoga is that you can do it, literally, anywhere—no equipment required. SVV and I wasted no time busting out an acro move or two every time we had a spare moment, whether while lounging at Villa Solitaire or out on the beach.

Standup Paddleboarding

There were a couple vendors around the island who rented out SUP boards by the hour. I was fortunate enough to meet a gal in a dive shop who let me take hers out free of charge out on Prickly Bay, and I was able to do a bit of SUP Yoga while I was out there.

River Tubing

We signed up for this hour-long adventure simply because Jade’s dad thought it would be fun. SVV and I were both “meh” about the whole thing, so much so that he didn’t wind up going. Big mistake. HUGE.

The five of us—Matt, Jade, Susan and her cousin—who did go had such a blast ripping through the rapids and jumping off waterfalls. It was one activity I’d do again without question, and the Adventure River Tubing guides made the whole experience even more fun.

Scuba Diving

We had an epic morning doing a two-tank dive with Aquanauts, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it (spoiler alert: DOLPHINS!). But even on the most calm of dive mornings, the marine life here delivers in spades.

Snorkeling

Not a diver? No problem. You can still reap the benefits of a snorkel trip out to Molinere Bay to see the underwater sculpture park with Seafaris Grenada.

Cocoa Plantation

Want to really test your skills? Throw on a pair of boots, grab a cutlass and try your skill as a farmhand at one of the several plantations on the island. (Me? I opted as Official Taste-Tester.)

Driving

While driving may not be considered an adventure in many countries, those drivers clearly have not been to Grenada. It’s straight-up Grand Prix-style driving here, devoid of street signs (or rules) and left to the whims of those behind the wheel. You’ll also be navigating the roads on the British side (left is right, down is up). In short: Only the most skilled should be granted a driver’s license here.

I would do all of those except the scuba adventure. I’m terrified of scuba diving.

Question: How does one GET to Grenada? As in, where do you fly into?

    • April 8, 2017

I’m about to publish that very post! You can fly direct via Miami, Atlanta or NYC =)

I would definitely go scuba diving there. Knowing myself I’d probably do everything on your list and tire myself out. However, I wouldn’t mind a beachy holiday just now 🙂

I really think you and I would make for awesome travel buddies, Dominique!
