A Peek at Edinburgh, the World’s Most Magical City

[shareaholic app=”share_buttons” id=”20872686″]

Edinburgh is the kind of city that sends chills up my spine at the mere mention of it.

Being back, I got the instant feeling of excited butterflies in my stomach—the kind I only ever experience when SVV picks me up at the airport after a long trip away, and I realize all over again that he is mine.

Edinburgh, Scotland

I wish Edinburgh were still mine. Perhaps it’s this quiet longing for the city to be my home that stirs something in my soul.

Edinburgh, Scotland

People who haven’t been there don’t understand my obsession with the Scottish capital, its locals and its culture. People who have, without fail, cite it as their favorite city, as well.

Edinburgh, Scotland

It’s the kind of city where artists create masterpieces and musicians discover muses around every windy, cobblestone bend.

Edinburgh, Scotland

It’s the kind of city that exudes such a magic that inspires J.K. Rowling to write a seven-book, bestselling series from one of its charmingly underrated Old Town cafes.

Edinburgh, Scotland

It’s the kind of city that its residents love so fully that they brave 300 days of unfavorable weather each year just to call it their own.

Edinburgh, Scotland

And it’s the kind of city that every person should experience at least once in their lives, so if you’ve never before thought about taking a little jaunt over the pond to Scotland, I sincerely beg you to reconsider.

Edinburgh, Scotland

I’ll even help you plan your trip there; that’s how much I want you to love it every bit as much as I do.

Edinburgh, Scotland

    MiNE too!

I have only been to Edinburgh once but LOVED it and can’t wait to go back! My older daughter attended a 3 week summer program in St. Andrews this past summer and went on a day trip into Edinburgh. The group that she was in voted to go shopping instead of stopping by the café where J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books. Katie is still bitter but she’s planning to return next year and says that she is going to that café no matter what!!

    • September 28, 2012

Well, the shopping IS great there. And actually, I’ve never even been to that cafe as I’m sure it’s always super crowded with tourists! But just walking around Edinburgh, you feel like you could be in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley—or elsewhere!

I just love Edinburgh. I was somehow blessed with beautiful weather when I was there (during the winter!!). I would love to go back some day.

    • September 28, 2012

Actually, as you can see above, we had amazing weather the first two days, as well. I shouldn’t say the weather is *always* bad–it isn’t–but every time I’ve been back until now, it’s been rainy and freezing (even in July!). Either way, it’s gorgeous, under a brilliant sun or a veil of clouds.

Love these photos and as always your passion for my home. 🙂

    • September 28, 2012

You have the best home IN THE WORLD. It’s easy to be passionate about such a fabulous place!

  • September 28, 2012

Beautiful pics- like always! I’ve never had Edinburg on my list of places that I want to go. I will definitely add it now.

    • September 28, 2012

Ahhhhh you must! I have been back many, many times, and it never, EVER disappoints!

  • September 28, 2012

Fantastic photos – particularly like the Oink van. Did you go in and try?

    • September 28, 2012

No, I didn’t! Should I next time? It was parked outside of Finnegan’s Wake, which used to be my regular haunt!

  • September 28, 2012

It’s on our list! Scotland and Dublin are HIGH on my next jaunt across the pond list so I will definitely be hitting you up for planning suggestions!

  • September 29, 2012

Okay, I confess that I actually love Glasgow way more than Edinburgh — it felt like Brooklyn to me, which is one of my fave places ever. Love that last photo of you guys, so cute!

    • October 5, 2012

OK, I confess that I’m weary about that statement, Baackes. Ha, I kid. I need to give Glagsow another chance. It’s been awhile!

  • September 29, 2012

Amazing, amazing photos! I feel like I am there!

  • September 30, 2012

We almost popped up there when we were last in the UK. I think we made a big mistake.

    • September 30, 2012

I have a feeling it won’t be your only chance.

  • September 30, 2012

Very nice city. And weather too, at least during the photo session 🙂

    • September 30, 2012

I know, right? I talk about how bad the weather is, and then Edinburgh has to go and make a liar out of me by granting us two absolutely fantastic days (then several of monsoon-like rain)!

  • September 30, 2012

What lens are you using? These photos are amazing. I wanted to go to Edinburgh since a very long time… you motivated me to go there really soon!!

    • September 30, 2012

Thanks, Seba! I only brought two lenses on this trip–the Canon 24-105mm and the Sigma 10-20mm–so they were all taken with those two.

Love the photos lady! I wish we could have met up since we’re on the same side of the ocean!

    • October 5, 2012

Dude, I know! And so close geographically, too! I think you two need to plan a trip to our new (old) house in Tennessee. I feel like you’d love Nashville.

  • October 1, 2012

Even before your post I’ve been *dying* to explore Scotland. It looks so romantic in a “Let’s get hammered and wear sweaters!” kind of way.

    • October 5, 2012

Add in “…and eat haggis and do a ceilidh…” and you have properly summed up my love of Scotland in a single sentence.

this is one of my favorite cities! yayy
so many amazing memories ;- )

  • October 1, 2012

I love all things Scottish. Don’t know if it the unbelievable scenery, the friendliness of the Scots, or my Scottish genes that makes me tear up thinking about going back. Our one day in Edinburgh it rained, but who cared. We loved exploring and seeing everything we could. So much to learn about, it just might take many trips back to get started. 🙂

  • October 2, 2012

Stunning. I’ve always wanted to go to Scotland. How cool. I never knew it was that sunny!

  • October 2, 2012

That’s it. I’m convinced. I must go to Edinburgh! Lovely photos!

  • October 2, 2012

I think I need to go back as an adult…I’ve been a couple times as a kid and teenager, but clearly I did it wrong because while I like Edinburgh, I don’t LOVE it like so many other people seem to. I think if I get weather like you did on my next trip, that could easily change!

  • October 2, 2012

I have never really been tempted to go to Scotland before but your photos are so gorgeous I may be rethinking my position.

  • October 4, 2012

Miss it so much, too, as you know. Thanks for the photos and the lovely way you describe the city and that “quiet longing.” As I said on Facebook, I think it’s a “take to your grave” kind of thing.

Lovely photos! I agree that Edinburgh feels like a magical city. But then, I loved everything about Scotland (ahem, except haggis). And hands-down, I think some of the nicest people in the world are in Inverness.

A glowing recommendation from you means a lot because you’ve really been everywhere. I’m toying seriously with England/Ireland as my next destination. Edinburgh may just have to top my list.

  • October 10, 2012

Beautiful pics! Each speaks volumes about the place and I can recall each place quite vividly. I had visited Edinburgh this summer and it was an amazing experience. Loved the last pic, awesome!!

Your pictures are beautiful! I really must visit Edinburgh one day.

  • October 11, 2012

Andrew and I are seriously considered a jaunt across the pond to check out Scotland and Ireland and maybe even some English countryside too. It just sounds so magical and looks so beautiful that we HAVE TO VISIT.

I studied my whole university there. as you said, we love it even we have to bear 300 days of bad weather. I never thought I will miss a place that much, until after I back my home country for almost 2 years.Edinburgh appeared in my dream, all the places I have been are so detailed and so distinct.
And the place born Harry Potter is a really lovely cafe,I have to say.

I miss Edinburgh! This was such a refreshing walk down memory lane 🙂
