One Day in Copenhagen, Denmark: A Cruiser’s Guide

Some of my favorite stops on my most recent Enrichment Voyage were not new ones at all—in fact, out of 19 countries, only two were first-time visits for me—but rather the places I had been many times before, like Denmark. Spending one day in Copenhagen is pretty criminal, but if that’s all you’ve got, it will give you a good taste of Scandinavia’s smallest country.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The difference in this visit was that for once I experienced Copenhagen in the summertime, which might as well have made it a new stop as different as it was bathed in the warmth of sunlight then blanketed by winter gloom and smothered in cold.

What you hear is true, not just in Denmark but across Scandinavia: Everyone is outdoors the second the sun comes up until the moment it goes down (and beyond). And bear in mind, in summer months, that can be 3am.

They’re also all so active, either out and running or walking or on their bikes. Guess that’s why you nary see an obese person!

I suddenly got why my friend Helle has always said she’ll never live anywhere else. Copenhagen in the summer is, quite simply, magnificent.

I’m so used to my American friends going AWOL when they have babies, until they’re at least two years old. Well, not in Denmark. They just throw the kid in the Baby Cadillac and haul him all over the city (even though all the stairs and cobblestone do not a stroller-friendly place make).

Copenhagen, Denmark

Just another reason to love the Danes, to love Denmark.

Almost as if to match my mood for leaving my dear friends—and this incomparable Danish weather—the summer was gone as the ship pulled away. For once Mother Nature mirrored my mood.

What else would you add to an itinerary of one day in Copenhagen?

The quality of your Photo Fridays puts all others to shame. Love your photos. Anyway, as the parent of an almost 7-year-old I understand what you’re saying with the hiding until the kid is 2. I wish us Americans didn’t do that. And unfortunately so many parents I know stay hidden forever. And the most they travel is to the Gulf or Disney World. Must see the world.

Your photo essay is absolutely stunning! I love, love, LOVE when the weather totally matches my mood and I am so glad you had that happen. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gotten to read/see this amazing day!

Isn’t it amazing the difference a season can make? I first visited Budapest in 2010 right after the Icelandic volcano exploded. Though I went in may, the weather was freezing and intensely stormy. I just went back to Budapest two weeks ago and the change in atmosphere was amazing! By the end of the trip I was wanting to move there πŸ™‚

Thank you for taking such good photos during your trip. I can appreciate Denmark a lot more now that I know exactly what to expect when I visit. My friend went and said she loved the food. I can hardly wait.
