Traveling in Color: My Favorite Shots From the Road

[shareaholic app=”share_buttons” id=”20872686″]

Two things you need to know about me: I love photography and I love color. Just ask my former fashion magazine co-worker, Ryan, who used to call my sense of style “garish” for all the use of bright pops of pigment I employ. The same could be said for my photography.

RED

Israel | Camels & Chocolate

I have fun photographing patterns and textures, so this fruit market in Jerusalem was a dream to visit as a photographer.

BLUE

Israel | Camels & Chocolate

I know it’s pretty expected to submit a sky photo for “blue,” but I just adore the deep blue hue of the sky that my wide angle lens allowed me to capture—and how tiny the camels look punctuating the landscape—in the Negev Desert without any need for post-processing.

YELLOW

My most recent big trip was leading 69 travelers through the Galapagos Islands. While we saw iguanas galore, this was the lone yellow fellow we spotted, and he really stood out in a crowd!

GREEN

Gorilla in Rwanda | Camels & Chocolate

My gorilla trek in Rwanda was one of my life’s greatest experiences. While I’d love to go back and do it all again with better equipment, I love how thriving and green the rainforest was there—we were traveling during the height of rainy season—and how the dappled light seeping through the trees illuminated this big guy as he was having a morning snack. It’s almost as if he were an angel with an aura of light surrounding him!

WHITE

Tsaarbank, South Africa | Camels & Chocolate

If you read my guest post on WordPress.com’s Weekly Photo Challenge, you know that SVV and I are fans of long exposure shots. While in South Africa last year, we took a weekend trip to West Coast National Park and Tsaarbank. I have never seen waves so strong, which resulted in ocean spray that shot into the air more than 20 feet. I love that we were able to capture that with a longer-than-average shutter speed.

Which of the above shots is your favorite?

Beautiful pics! The gorilla one is my favorite.

    • August 10, 2012

Mine, too! I feel like he’s about to be beamed up into gorilla heaven…or space…or something =)

  • August 10, 2012

Love! And while I love all things red, I think the yellow if my favorite!

    • August 10, 2012

I always think of you as “a lady in red,” probably because of your awesome avatar!

    Katherina

I LOVE you choice for white – Beautiful!!!

    • August 10, 2012

Thank you! That place is absolutely crazy–I’ve never seen waves so powerful. Would be scary to be trapped on one of those rocks!

  • August 10, 2012

You win! I’ve seen a lot of submissions for this contest and I think I like yours the most. Yellow is my fave.

    • August 10, 2012

Aww, thank you! That’s a huge compliment as I’ve seen some great ones =)

  • August 10, 2012

The red made me take a big step backwards. Fabulous!

  • August 10, 2012

Love the pics (especially the red) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new site. Wow is it gorgeous. I haven’t been by lately because of our lousy internet but you’ve done an incredible job. Thx for nominating us!

    • August 10, 2012

Thank you! It’s still a work in progress, but I’m happy with it =)

  • August 10, 2012

Another reminder why you are a favorite photographer of ours. The “white” entry is crazy cool.

    And thanks for the nomination.

    • August 11, 2012

If you play, I fully expect a bottle of bourbon to make an appearance in some capacity.

  • August 10, 2012

I love them all yet think the gorilla calls my name. A must see place in the future.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check this out.

    • August 11, 2012

I foresee a whole lot of sunsets and canyon scapes in your entry!

  • August 10, 2012

    Gorgeous!

  • August 10, 2012

I like the camels the best because it’s something I haven’t seen yet (Africa or the Middle East) and would very much like to. I’ve been nominated for capture the color too and need to get on it!

    • August 11, 2012

I felt like I couldn’t *not* include a camel photo, you know? 😉

  • August 10, 2012

Wow, that last photo is amazing! I’ve just started playing around with long exposure shots and I have to say I really like this type of photography. How long was the exposure for that shot?

    • August 11, 2012

In daylight, we always use filters with long exposures. So this was shot with a filter (can’t remember which one…circular polarizer, maybe?) at around 15 seconds. So fun!

  • August 11, 2012

Nice of the yellow iguana to pose on a black background for you, but he looks pretty annoyed. What exactly did you say to him to get him to look at the camera?

    • August 11, 2012

I think he was probably pretty PO’d that everyone was there to see Lonesome George (RIP), and that he was only a secondary attraction. I don’t blame him: It’s hard having a famous roommate and living in his shadow! Maybe George’s death wasn’t actually accidental after all…

  • August 11, 2012

Better camera equipment for me would be upgrading from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4S. Your photos are more than amazing enough!

    • August 11, 2012

I have to admit I do use my iPhone 4S a whole lot for photography these days! But we also have purchased some pretty kick-ass lenses that I didn’t have when I went to play with the gorillas, so I’d love to test them out on those guys—from a healthy distance away, that is 😉

  • August 11, 2012

Amazing shots! The white one is my favorite, looks more like clouds!!
What a co-incidence, I too have posted for this contest yesterday!! Do check out my post!

    • August 11, 2012

I will! And yes, it’s a bit eerie how the ocean looks like it could be clouds–as if it could have been taken from a plane up on top of a mountain.

  • August 11, 2012

I love the gorilla shot. It really does look like an aura around him and I’ve always been so fascinated by those big fellas! I’m gonna have to go back and read your post about that trek. Love the photos today.

    • August 14, 2012

It was pretty intense–and otherworldly at the same time. I would love to do it all over again now that I know what to expect!

      • August 15, 2012
        Lindsey

I wouldn’t doubt it! The experience looked unreal. Definitely on my list now.

  • August 11, 2012

That white picture is amazing, it doesn’t look real!

  • August 11, 2012

Gahh! Your entries are my favorite yet! I can’t wait to enter but mine will be a very last minute submission… I’m on the road for two weeks and left my hard drive at home! *head smack*

    • August 14, 2012

First-world problem of the well-traveled, right? I never have the right images on the right hard drive on the right computer when I need them!

  • August 12, 2012

Easily some of the best photos I’ve seen in general. I Love your white photo. I love long exposures in general.

    • August 14, 2012

Thank you, Anwar! So nice of you to say.

  • August 12, 2012

Did Ryan call your photos garnish or you garnish? because colorful you are indeed (cough the dresses!! ;-))

    • August 28, 2012

He called ME garish! How rude! (I secretly love it.)

i secretly love it too. my inspiration! i need to put more effort into my clothes for my photo shoots …inspired by KL : ) never cease the jumping though. on or off roofs : )

    Ginny

Love the colors. Your photographs just blow me away. Such a talent. Have you ever thought about teaching your mom on how to use a camera? I bet she would be good at it too. 🙂

    • August 14, 2012

I think she needs a little nudging. (*nudge, nudge*)

  • August 13, 2012

I love the “blue” photo. The sky and its clouds are such a great contrast the the desert and the camels.

  • August 13, 2012

They are all beautiful photos but the South African one is just incredible!!

  • August 15, 2012

Shots are extremely beautiful. Iguana is my favourite one. It looks so realistic!

  • August 15, 2012

You really are such a fantastic photographer. I can’t pick a favorite, I love them all!

  • August 16, 2012

So crazy cool…love ALL of them, although the Negev Desert is my favorite, because it minimizes what most people focus on (camels) and maximizes the sky and clouds. Plus the rule of thirds in a beautiful, artistic way comes full circle!

    • August 28, 2012

I’m a sucker for the rule of thirds! I try to use it multiple times in any one image if possible. It’s sort of like math–and I’m a giant (closet) math nerd =)

  • August 17, 2012

I think my favorites are the blue and yellow photos. The camels look so little and that iguana looks so lizardy and amazing.

  • August 19, 2012

All of them are beyond amazing, buuuuuut I guess I will have to go with white! 🙂

  • August 24, 2012

Hello! you are a dear blogger that I follow for some time now and I’m really enjoying your posts. This is an amazing photo-collection with stunning captures! Red from Israel is my favorite..for now..;)

  • August 24, 2012

Dammit Kristin! Why do you have to be so good? 😀

    Fantastic shots.

    • August 28, 2012

You’re one to talk! Your set is my favorite so far!

  • August 28, 2012

You haven’t made it easy for the judges.

    • August 28, 2012

Thank you so much–that’s the best compliment I’ve gotten yet =)

  • August 30, 2012

I knew you would rock this challenge! Amazing. So glad I nominated you. 🙂

  • September 6, 2012

I just love how all the colors stood up on the photos. I can’t pick what photo is my favorite because they’re all beautiful!:)
