Why Camels & Chocolate?

In the four years since this site has been up and running, I have won the coveted Best Travel Weblog Award at the Bloggies for three straight years (2009, 2010 and 2011) and was retired into the blogging “Hall of Fame.” This site has also been featured on various websites like the LATimes.com, Wired.com and in magazines such as Marie Claire. I often promote each post on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and other social media platforms.

Articles, which number more than 400 on destinations from the Arctic Circle to the South Pacific, run the gamut of CouchSurfing in Iceland to adventure travel in New Zealand to five-star stays in Africa. You’ll find a little bit of everything around these parts. I post a minimum of three times a week and always do a visuals-heavy Photo Friday; it’s about quality, not quantity, after all.

All opinions are strictly my own and are not influenced by any person, property or board of tourism. All information is accurate at the time of publication, but in the travel world things are always a changin’, so if you notice a discrepancy, please let me know.

Who’s Reading?

Due to my job as a travel journalist writing for some of the best travel magazines, guidebooks and websites out there, I have a devoted following of other travel editors, fellow flashpackers, and those who dream of quitting their desk job and traveling around the world with no end in sight. I have readers in more than 100 countries, though the majority come from the following nations, in this order:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Australia
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • New Zealand
  • India
  • Italy
  • Switzerland

What Does My Money Get Me?

All ads are 160 x 160 banners; JPEG and GIF files are accepted, and videos are determined on a case-by-case basis. Text link ads are also available. Payment is accepted via PayPal, and contracts are done on a rolling, monthly basis. E-mail me at CamelsAndChocolate(at)gmail(dot)com. Only serious inquiries, please!

Can I Submit My Travel Product for Review?

Sure. From time to time, I’ll feature a book or product I really believe in (such as Brenthaven’s X-ray-friendly bags), but I can’t guarantee anything but honest coverage—this is no payola site, just so you know. Contact me at CamelsAndChocolate(at)gmail(dot)com for more details. No press releases will be posted or contests promoted for free.

Do You Accept Free Trips?

Due to my career as a travel journalist, I have little time for travel that is not for my day job, so travel solely for this site is taken on a case-by-case basis, and all sponsorship will be fully disclosed, per FTC guidelines. Still, I’m more than happy to discuss your proposal.

Can I Write for You?

Currently, this site is run and managed by my husband, SVV, and me. However, from time to time, I’ll be on a long journey with limited Internet access and have a need for guest bloggers. If you have something you’d like to write about, let’s chat and I might be able to use it while away on my next far-flung adventure.

I enjoyed browsing your website and found it suitable for one of my clients to advertise on it in the format of a short sentence with a link to my client’s website which could be placed within or at the end of a post;or in the format of a text ad. In return I would be happy to compensate you for that.

I look forward to hear from you!

    Hi Kirsten,

I am an artist and I am hosting a creative retreat at Peacock Pavilions in Marrakesh in October. I wondered if you could give me advice on marketing this trip. You can see all the information about the retreat here:

Do you think your readers are the demographic we are trying to reach? Do you currently have ad space available?

I really appreciate any help you can give me!
