Our Nashville Urban Adventure

Remember when the recession hit and staycations were all the rage? Well, we’re bringing that trend back, much as I loathe the term. (Actually, I prefer “urban adventure.” Yeah, let’s just stick with that.)

Weekend BrunchSo many weekends of late have taken us outside of Middle Tennessee that it was nice to spend 48 hours—albeit, rainy ones—in Nashville for a change. Here’s how SVV and Ella and I owned this one.

Friday

6pm Get home from work. Order takeout from Taco Mamacita to arrive at the same time Ella and SVV do. I’m a sucker for the two-tacos-and-a-side deal, though I usually tack on an order of plantains, as well. YOLO, y’all.

Ella the Maltese8pm Our friend who owns Wiseacre beer—which has the best taproom in Memphis—is doing a tap takeover at the Stone Fox, so we meet him and a bunch of friends there for some delicious milk stouts.

The Stone Fox in Nashville10:30pm The band is so obnoxiously loud, we call it an early night and head back to the condo.

9am Client meeting at Barista Parlor. The client in mention happens to be a friend, so we meet at one of my favorite coffee spots—the new location—to talk shop and interview a prospective contractor.

Barista Parlor Nashville10:30am Brunch at Saint Añejo. This new-ish Mexican spot is right behind my office, so I’m a frequent fixture at 2-for-1 Wednesdays. Within the past couple weeks, the restaurant has unveiled brunch, and it. is. phenomenal. From Horchata Cinnamon French Toast to Mexican Hot Chocolate Waffles to Hot Chicken and Waffles with cream cheese drizzle, I wanted everything on the menu.

Saint Anejo brunchBonus: 2-for-1 libations, plus you can bring back your chip at any other point to redeem it.

Saint Anejo wafflesNoon Nap time! At least for SVV. (I caught up on work, but what else is new?)

2pm Hike in Percy Warner State Park. Even though it was gray and gross out, we wanted to get out and about with Ella as she’s been cooped up for so much of the winter and is an outdoors girl at heart.

Percy Warner ParkPercy Warner ParkOur friends Daina and Brian and their fur son Max were up for the task, so they joined us for a two-hour hike in one of Nashville’s biggest parks.

Percy Warner Park Percy Warner ParkDespite SVV being dressed for an Arctic adventure, it was actually a pleasant day for a trek in the woods.

Percy Warner Park Percy Warner Park Percy Warner ParkOnly one of us got cold and, well, he doesn’t have much fur—though he does rock an excess of body fat and chin rolls—so I guess we can’t blame him much.

Percy Warner Park5pm We had planned to go out for dinner but were starving after our pretty hilly hike and so ordered Thai Esane, Nashville’s best Thai, as soon as we got home

7pm We had planned to see a movie, but an hour before Eric Paslay‘s opener was set to go on at 3rd and Lindsley, my friend Nat (his fiance) texted that she had two tickets that weren’t being used. We happily snatched them up and traded our night at the cinema for a night at da club.

Eric Paslay in NashvilleIf you’re not following this guy, may I suggest that you do? He’s so talented—and already had a full career as a songwriter (writing hits for Jake Owen, Eli Young Band, Love & Theft and others) before going out as an artist himself.

Sunday

11am My favorite lunch spot in town, the Silly Goose, recently started serving brunch, so for part of a magazine feature I’m working on, we moseyed on over and met my talented photographer pal Alyssa and her husband Ben.

Silly Goose brunch in NashvilleOnly available on Sunday, the Goose’s brunch service includes witty names like the Pagan, Gandhi, Dali Lama and Santa Claus, though you need not look any further than the Hejus (pictured above with briskey, fried egg, Gorgonzola, horseradish, candied fennel, arugula and biscuit). It might be my new favorite brunch dish of all time! Though the semolina pancakes were nothing to scoff at either.

Silly Goose pancakes1pm After a quick stop at Welcome Home, it actually is time to go home and occupy the couch for the rest of the day. No Super Bowl parties for us; just Scandal catch-up (for me), Internetting (for him) and a whole lot of writing to do for our March issue!

Welcome Home NashvilleHow did you spend the weekend?

Sounds like a great weekend full of lots of yummy food! I did a few pet visits but for the most part spent the weekend in my apartment trying to sort through hundreds of photos and put them in order by year so I can put them in albums. I made a small dent and plan to keep going. It’s a project I’ve been meaning to do for years but I always get overwhelmed and give up!

If you ever come back to Nashville, I promise to take you on the Luna highlights tour =)

(And funny, I am currently sorting hundreds of photos in an attempt to take my 20MB of remaining startup disc space to 100GB, hehe.)

What an amazing weekend! A whirlwind tour, hitting so many highlights. Thanks for sharing all this great info about our amazing city–including a new Sunday Brunch spot!.

Thank you! Both brunch spots were phenomenal. I’m so happy that Nashville is FINALLY becoming a brunch town (though there still needs to be a couple more Saturday options, in my opinion!).

I like the sound of your “urban adventure” so much more delicate than “staycation.” It just sounds lazy!
Last weekend, I started our adventure of getting to the most Northern mountains of the Czech Republic from Germany. To ski. My husband isn’t a skier and decided to stay at home in readiness for the Berlin Film Festival whilst we went off to this little village in the middle of no-where. Oh, did I tell you. I don’t drive, so trains it was. Many, many tiny little trains. It’s a 12 hour journey that took 14 as a rock fell on the tiny train station, so we had to use the bus-replacement service instead. That took 2 hours!

Next year, I’m taking a bunch of people with me. And their cars LOL!

Ha! Love that you call it an Urban Adventure. I would totally choose the same term. I was just talking with one of my good friends about how we’d love to take a trip down to Nashville. It sounds like you have some awesome, awesome food recommendations. So I will most definitely be saving this post for when the time comes!

    • August 14, 2015

Yes, you do! There is SO MUCH to eat here, you might need more than just a weekend 😉

  • August 21, 2015

That French toast looks like a winner, and the hot chocolate seems pretty delicious, too.

    • August 21, 2015

I actually preferred the hot chocolate to the French toast, but the chicken and waffles is above and beyond The Best!

. This post is expressing the way of pleasure around the contemporaneous urban life. People is being busy with their life and work, but inside of this busy life a man can find his pleasure in delicious food, musical night, walk with pet and so on. Really this post is too good to find out the happiness from city life.

    Good God those waffles.

My roommate just got back from Nashville and brought back some chocolate pecan treat things that were quite tasty. Are pecan a thing down there?

Anyway, I’m new to your blog but I love it. Great design, style & I love your photo posts! I can’t wait to read more.
