It’s hard to believe it was just five years ago that I was sitting at my desk at Conde Nast, reading an embarrassing number of these so-called weblog anomalies I had discovered through BlogHer and thinking, “hey, you know what? I should start my own!” And five years is a pretty big deal, wouldn’t you say? One might even say it’s a milestone of oceanic proportions. Which brings me to this…
The generous and ineffable non-profit organization Institute for Shipboard Education is partnering with C&C to send one of you very lucky readers—and a guest!—out to sea.
That’s right: One of you gets to go on a 25-day Enrichment Voyage aboard the MV Explorer and take your favorite person along for the ride (er, sail).
Pretty freakin’ cool, huh? I know I’m already jealous of the winner.
In case you missed the boat—or should I say ship (i.e. my past year of coverage on the program)—Enrichment Voyages are educational “cruises” (though don’t say that word in the presence of the MV Explorer, as it’s one of our banned terms!). The Institute for Shipboard Education, the parent company of Semester at Sea, operates these voyages each December and May when the ship isn’t transporting college students around the world, and anybody is allowed to go, no matter their age, height, nationality or political beliefs (heh). Voyagers are from all walks of life—this past May, our youngest participant was 14 months, our oldest was 91 years and our median age was 47—and come from every corner of the world; friends I made on the ship this spring hailed from as far away as Mauritius and the Canary Islands and as nearby as Kentucky. Best of all, I find the people who embark on such a journey to be curious, like-minded, open individuals who always have a story—and wealth of knowledge—to share.
Days are filled with activities from language classes to art workshops to lounging by the pool (you can do whatever strikes your fancy—nobody will judge). On the December voyage, ISE just announced that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will be one of the on-board speakers, along with Peter Shankman, Jonathan Murray (television producer of Bunim/Murray fame), and other notable educators and thought leaders in their respective fields. Additionally, Jairek Robbins—son of Tony; a real gem of a guy with whom I had the privilege of traveling—will hold a Rapid Results Retreat during the voyage, as well. In a nutshell, not only will you gain a fantastic travel opportunity should you win, but you’ll get to go about it with a whole lot of fascinating people at that.

To Central and South America and the Caribbean, more specifically: Nassau, Bahamas; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Callao, Peru; Manta, Ecuador; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and San Diego, California. What’s in the fine print?
- This contest is open to all citizens of all countries, aside from ISE employees and SVV’s and my blood relations.
- You must be available to travel from Dec. 8, 2012 through Jan. 2, 2013. However, should you win, you may transfer the prize to a family member.
- You must have a valid passport or apply for one upon winning this contest.
- You’ll pay your own airfare to/from the port of embarkation (Nassau) and debarkation (San Diego).
- ISE will cover your room and board in a luxurious mid-deck outside cabin, the retail cost of which is more than $10,000.
- But! Don’t forget if you are a U.S. citizen and win, you will be responsible for declaring your winnings on your taxes.
- Contest will run from Aug. 1, 2012 to Aug. 31, 2012 at 11:59pm PST. Winner will be chosen by Random.org.
- I will announce a winner on this blog on Sept. 4 and notify the winner by e-mail. Should the winner not respond within five days, I will select a new winner via Random.org.

Thank you for holding this contest, my best friend just shared it with me and introduced it to your blog. We’re best friends on opposite sides of the world (well UK & USA) and my dad will sadly have passed by the time of this cruise. It’s a horrible time right now but this gives me a little hope that we’ll have some laughter ahead of us. I’ve never been outside of the US (besides 1 time in Mexico when I was a kid). Such a long adventure to so many places sounds kinda scary but crazy amazing at the same time. Whoever the winner is, I’m sure they will share their experiences with plenty of people!!! Yay!

I sailed on the Spring 2011 voyage and had the time of my life! Sailing for 3+ months to 11 different countries went by way too fast, I still am in awe of all the experiences and friendships I made on that voyage. Can’t believe it was almost a year and half ago!! I absolutely love and desperately miss Semester At Sea, there isn’t a day that goes by that I wish I was back on the ship. Now I get a chance to try to get back on MV(my forever ocean home) and explore the world some more! Thanks to Enrichment Voyages and Kristin!

At that time, the MV Explorer wasn’t use for summer voyages. The trip was a life changing experience, opening my eyes to new cultures, customs, life and allowed me to search my soul to understand my views of the world around me.

The MV Explorer can accomodate 836 people! Congratulations on your 5-year blogiversary and thank you for writing and inspiring all of us with chronic wanderlust to travel. My brother was on the MV Explorer for Semester at Sea in 2008, and it changed his life in many ways. Now he inspires the rest of our family to get out and see the world. My husband and I would be beyond thrilled to win this contest – heading to Facebook and Twitter to spread the word now!
Also, I of course followed both Enrichment Voyages and C&C on Twitter, and tweeted the giveaway. I also liked both pages on Facebook, shared the contest on my own page, and pinned images and the contest @LunaticAtLarge. So I did everything except blog, since I don’t have one. Thanks again!

Since I first heard of Semester At Sea, I knew I had to go. It’s my lifelong dream to sail around the world – what better way than to continue at school while doing so? But I knew I could never afford it. Now I’m going into my final year, but I hope the education never stops. I’m sure there are many other people in the exact same situation as me who would appreciate this amazing opportunity just as much as I would. But I hope I get the chance
The ships capacity is 836 amazing people. It would be the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to sail on it again!

This ship was my home for 100 glorious days in the Fall of 2008. It was the most life changing experience I’ve ever had and I miss this ship more than I can say.
If I win though I’m going to send my mom and my fiance’s mom on the voyage. They have both heard me talk constantly about how much my voyage meant to me and I think they would love the chance to experience this journey.

The MV Explorer can hold an astounding 836, which I will include me and my fiance! I have been planning to visit Central and South America for the past year as well as studying Spanish in order to prep myself. It would be the chance of a lifetime to spend a month exploring both while on the MV Explorer!
