Photo Friday: Traveling in Color

From time to time, I’ll exercise editorial jurisdiction and use Photo Friday for a common theme instead of a destination to mix things up a bit. And while I don’t usually participate in too many Internet contests or memes, TravelSupermarket’s Capture the Colour contest appealed to me because, well, I love photography and I love color. Just ask my former fashion magazine co-worker, Ryan, who used to call my sense of style “garish” for all the use of bright pops of pigment I employ. The same could be said for my photography.

Red

Israel | Camels & ChocolateI have fun photographing patterns and textures, so this fruit market in Jerusalem was a dream to visit as a photographer.

Blue

Israel | Camels & ChocolateI know it’s pretty expected to submit a sky photo for “blue,” but I just adore the deep blue hue of the sky that my wide angle lens allowed me to capture—and how tiny the camels look punctuating the landscape—in the Negev Desert without any need for post-processing.

Yellow

My most recent big trip was leading 69 travelers through the Galapagos Islands. While we saw iguanas galore, this was the lone yellow fellow we spotted, and he really stood out in a crowd!

Green

Gorilla in Rwanda | Camels & ChocolateMy gorilla trek in Rwanda was one of my life’s greatest experiences. While I’d love to go back and do it all again with better equipment, I love how thriving and green the rainforest was there—we were traveling during the height of rainy season—and how the dappled light seeping through the trees illuminated this big guy as he was having a morning snack. It’s almost as if he were an angel with an aura of light surrounding him!

White

Tsaarbank, South Africa | Camels & ChocolateIf you read my guest post on WordPress.com’s Weekly Photo Challenge, you know that SVV and I are fans of long exposure shots. While in South Africa last year, we took a weekend trip to West Coast National Park and Tsaarbank. I have never seen waves so strong, which resulted in ocean spray that shot into the air more than 20 feet. I love that we were able to capture that with a longer-than-average shutter speed.

Want to join in yourself? You don’t have to be nominated—just do the following:

To participate you have to be a blogger and submit a blog post with photos from your trips around the world that showcase the following colors: red, white, blue, green, yellow. Professional photographer and judge Ken Kaminesky posted some helpful guidelines here. In order to win the grand prize (£2,000 in travel funds), you have to post one for each color, but you can also enter to win the category-specific prizes (an iPad 3 or prize of similar value). The contest is hosted by TravelSupermarket.com and judged by fellow bloggers.

Be sure and nominate five other travel bloggers to take part in Capture the Colour. And by Aug. 27, 2012, alert TravelSupermarket that you’ve entered the competition by either posting a link to your blog post on Facebook mentioning Capture the Colour and tagging the TravelSupermarket.com Facebook page and/or by linking to your post via Twitter and including @travelsupermkt and #capturethecolour.

Personally, I’d love to see the following bloggers participate:

Which of the above shots is your favorite?

  10. Wow, that last photo is amazing! I’ve just started playing around with long exposure shots and I have to say I really like this type of photography. How long was the exposure for that shot?
Lindsey recently posted..Five Months Until Travel! My Profile

    • In daylight, we always use filters with long exposures. So this was shot with a filter (can’t remember which one…circular polarizer, maybe?) at around 15 seconds. So fun!

  11. Nice of the yellow iguana to pose on a black background for you, but he looks pretty annoyed. What exactly did you say to him to get him to look at the camera?
Steve recently posted..National S’mores DayMy Profile

    • I think he was probably pretty PO’d that everyone was there to see Lonesome George (RIP), and that he was only a secondary attraction. I don’t blame him: It’s hard having a famous roommate and living in his shadow! Maybe George’s death wasn’t actually accidental after all…

  12. Better camera equipment for me would be upgrading from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4S. Your photos are more than amazing enough!
Mohamed recently posted..Southwest….and then the restMy Profile

    • I have to admit I do use my iPhone 4S a whole lot for photography these days! But we also have purchased some pretty kick-ass lenses that I didn’t have when I went to play with the gorillas, so I’d love to test them out on those guys—from a healthy distance away, that is ;-)

  13. Amazing shots! The white one is my favorite, looks more like clouds!!
What a co-incidence, I too have posted for this contest yesterday!! Do check out my post!

  14. I love the gorilla shot. It really does look like an aura around him and I’ve always been so fascinated by those big fellas! I’m gonna have to go back and read your post about that trek. Love the photos today.

  15. That white picture is amazing, it doesn’t look real!

  16. Gahh! Your entries are my favorite yet! I can’t wait to enter but mine will be a very last minute submission… I’m on the road for two weeks and left my hard drive at home! *head smack*

  18. Did Ryan call your photos garnish or you garnish? because colorful you are indeed (cough the dresses!! ;-) )

  19. Love the colors. Your photographs just blow me away. Such a talent. Have you ever thought about teaching your mom on how to use a camera? I bet she would be good at it too. :-)

  20. I love the “blue” photo. The sky and its clouds are such a great contrast the the desert and the camels.

  24. So crazy cool…love ALL of them, although the Negev Desert is my favorite, because it minimizes what most people focus on (camels) and maximizes the sky and clouds. Plus the rule of thirds in a beautiful, artistic way comes full circle!
Charu recently posted..Eco Friendly Travel Gear: What to Look For When You’re Buying Gadgets, Clothing and Travel AccessoriesMy Profile

    • I’m a sucker for the rule of thirds! I try to use it multiple times in any one image if possible. It’s sort of like math–and I’m a giant (closet) math nerd =)

  25. I think my favorites are the blue and yellow photos. The camels look so little and that iguana looks so lizardy and amazing.
