Mind the Gap (plus, a Giveaway!)

If you follow me on the Working Closet or take note of most of the self photos I post on here, you’ve probably noticed I’m not so much a jeans girl. In fact, I’ve often been described as denim-phobic. This is not because I find jeans too casual or feel like I always need to be dressed to the nines, or that I think you don’t look great in your jeans, it’s simply because I’ve never really found a company that makes them for girls like me. By that I mean athletes who are not exactly proportionate by society standards (i.e. size 2, 25-inch waist…or something as equally ridiculous). As someone with a small waist, muscular legs and wide(ish) hips, if I find jeans I can pull up over my thighs, they fall off my waist; if they fit through the middle, I inevitably rock a camel toe. So when the darling Justine of Brand About Town approached me about being a Gap Brand Enthusiast for the new Born to Fit line, it was almost too ironic. Nevertheless, I shop at Gap often and find their sizes much more female-friendly than, say, Rock & Republic or J Brand, so I thought, what the hey? (Besides, did I mention free! goodies!?) So they sent me a box of the just-released 1969 line, (plus a super-awesome “Born to Blog” shirt and pretty tote bag) and behold:

Wonder of wonders, skinny jeans that actually look good on athletic builds like me! These babies (the Always Skinny) fit like a glove—something I never thought I’d say about skinnies, as those are by far the toughest make for any girl to master—and I managed to create the tank, jeans and stilettos look I’ve often envied of my peers but never thought I’d be able to pull off. The best part about this new gig is that I got to team up with my good friend Moose and host a party for 20 of our closest friends and—here’s the kicker—give away free Born to Fit jeans to them all! (Yes, Moose and I were quite the popular pair for a solid two-hour period.)

Being the hostesses with the mostesses, we decided to prepare a semblance of a feast. Moose brought the gourmet cheese, crackers, et al, while I stocked up on fruit and baked some scrumptious (if I do say so myself) Oreo Cookie Cookies and S’mores Bars. Unfortunately, everyone was so quick to dig in that I didn’t have time to pre-photograph the lavish spread. (I suppose I should just be happy I’m friends with girls who actually eat!) And, of course, there was wine. Lots and lots of wine. (What’s a jeans party sans adult beverages anyway?)

While I was still serving the first round of said wine, I came in to find the jeans pile demolished and a full-blown panty party taking place in the two bedrooms, which we used as makeshift changing rooms.  Everyone was so eager to try on their new jeans. (SVV’s only sad now that he decided to go kayaking in the Pacific to escape the estrogen fest!)

Which means I also failed to get much footage with the fabulous Flip video camcorder I was sent, but fear not, that bad boy will get plenty of usage in the coming months (I am a multimedia fiend, in case you haven’t noticed). And Leah and Holly were so kind as to model their jeans for the web so I could briefly test the new product.

(For the record, they both were trying on the longs, hence why the jeans drag the floor ever so slightly!)

What’s perhaps the most phenomenal facet of the Born to Fit wear is that it looked good on everyone. In fact, Senorita Sensibly Sassy and I thought them worthy to be dubbed the Sisterhood of the Born to Fit Jeans. They looked amazing on Sarah, who is far more petite than I.

They looked outstanding on Holly, who is my height but much more slender through the torso.

They looked fantastic on Leah, who not only recently had a baby (she says she still feels the aftermath and baby weight, but I couldn’t spot a hint of flab anywhere on her body!) but towers over me and is far more svelte than me, post-childbirth.

They looked perfect on my best friend from Tennessee, Megan, who was in town visiting, is a couple inches shorter than I am and an enviable size 0 (and the girl is a pastry chef at that!).

It was miraculous, to be honest. But I think the name “Born to Fit” couldn’t have been more, well, fitting. For the record, Gap is not paying me a penny for this promotion; true, they gave my friends and I free jeans, but for that I wouldn’t feel compelled to write such complimentary things if they weren’t true. For someone who travels as much as I do, this denim line is a revelation—I often freeze my booty off in places like Berlin and the Arctic Circle because I don’t have proper attire. But no longer! I even loved the skinnies so much, I went into the Fisherman’s Wharf store the following day to buy the Sexy Boot jeans, as well. (If you’ve ever stepped foot in the Hell that is Fisherman’s Wharf, let alone at the height of summer—i.e. prime tourist season—you’ll realize this is true love.) And I’ll probably return for the Real Straights in the next day or two. I’m of the vein that if you find something that works, you purchase it in every color and model. Hey, I may just become a jeans girl after all.

If you’re envious of my new duds, here’s a chance to score your own. Gap gave me a $50 gift card to give away to one lucky reader so you can land some Born to Fit jeans of your own; just leave a comment below (about anything you like, I’m not picky) by 5pm PST on Friday, Aug. 14, and I’ll randomly select a winner the following Monday. Extra entries to those who blog and/or Tweet about the giveaway (be sure and e-mail me if you do, so I know to put your name in the pot twice!).

And thanks to Gap for making me—not to mention, my friends—one group of happy jeans-clad ladies!

  1. Shawna says:

That $50 will come in handy after I pop out a kiddo in the next three weeks or so . . .as much as I’m looking forward to wearing “normal” clothes again, I know that my pre-pregnancy “normal” clothes won’t fit for some time (bah!) and will defnitely be needing some new duds!

  2. I can’t wait to try these. I’m typically not much of a denim girl as it mostly seems uncomfortable to me but these look really cute.

  3. Kate says:

I would love to win $50! So jealous of your jean party. They look great on you!

  4. Sasha Schroeder says:

Hey girlie, I hope you are having a good time jetsetting around the world. If you ever make it out to Chicago in the near future, let me know! Plus I would love a $50 gift certificate to the gap :)

  5. Lori Barbely says:

What? No! You can’t wear pants. That’s just….wrong! LOL

  6. I had such a good time! And I honestly can’t believe how well those jeans fit. Let me know when you are free for lunch okidokes? (oh and I am not entering the contest, I am totally satisfied!)

  7. Ha! I was just whinging about JCrew discontinuing the only jean that ever fit me (the hipslung)… I’m skeptical, but I may just have to give Gap jeans another try.

  8. Geogypsy says:

The jeans are cute and do look good on everyone of such different builds. Although I occasionally wear jeans they usually don’t fit right. Yet I love to wear skirts and dresses for any occasion. And I think you always look nice in your dresses too. I did notice you rarely wear pants. I’ll throw my name in the hat/jeans for a try at something new.

Looks like a very fun party.

  9. Christy says:

Girl, I was thinking today how I needed some new jeans, so of course I had to comment. :-) I read your blog ALWAYS but am horrible to write anything. Forgive me! I hope you are doing well and LOVED the pictures of you swimming in the Arctic Ocean. Whew!

  10. Naeemah Clark says:

    Hi Kristen,
Megan looks great, but you are perfect as you are–no need to envy her size 0. That’s just not who you are! Those jeans look great on you!!!!

  11. Rhi says:

    SO FUN!

  12. Amy says:

This looks like it’d be so much fun! And I could use some new jeans for sure!

  13. Bethany says:

I’m CONSTANTLY looking for jeans that are long enough for me…I could definitely use some new ones! Great giveaway.

  14. You know, I think you and I have a similar build and I’ve always had a hard time finding flattering jeans, but Gap jeans tend to work well on my body too. I’ve never even so much as tried on skinny jeans though, because I thought I knew better than to bother with legs my shape… however I’m thinking after seeing them on you that I should give it a shot because they look FAB on you!

And P.S. even if the card is no good in Canada, don’t discount me from the contest, because oh darn… then I guess I’d have to go on a shopping trip down to Seattle ;)

  15. Sara says:

Ok I am sold. I am going to try them even though I have never found gap jeans to fit me perfectly before! Maybe this is the ticket!

  16. Erin says:

You all look fantastic and you have definitely got me convinced to check out my local Gap and Gap outlet to scope their jeans- I used to be a Gap jeans girl, but haven’t been having as much luck with them lately. Time for a second look!

  17. Amy says:

Oh, I must go to Gap and try on some of these!

  18. Deanna G. says:

I love Gap! Enter me :)

  19. k says:

I love gap jeans! i have a weirdly proportioned lower body and they fit perfect!

  20. Nickie says:

I really need to go to gap and try these on. I hate shopping for jeans. I always feel fat…..

  21. Moose says:

We done good, Madame Camel! Huzzah! And, yeah, don’t enter me. Obviously. Just wanted to say “pats on the back” all around. And pats on the butt, cause DAMN, OUR BUTTS LOOK FINE. :)

  22. Chaya says:

I had a baby 4 weeks ago and nothing fits! I don’t think the weight is just going to melt off like last time, so $50 toward a new shirt or pants while I work the pounds off would be so helpful.

  23. Teej says:

Oh, MAN, do I wish there were a gap in Moz. Maybe South Africa! I’m intrigued. (And those jeans DO actually look really good on everybody in the photos. How is that possible?)

  24. Zelda says:

i love Gap jeans! those new collection look wonderful and i do need a new pair of jeans *fingers crossed*. i tweeted about it too http://twitter.com/PurpleDuckling

  25. Anne in SC says:

You and Moose (and Holly with the Nintendo party) have great charma – I would like some, please, so just let me go a head and win this contest, please! I am in need of some jeans that fit correctly.

  26. Kaylea says:

I would love to try these jeans! I am currently a one brand girl, and the gift card would give me the opportunity (and the guts) to try something new, something that sounds so fab and I’ve heard great things about!!!

    Thanks!

  27. Metalia says:

Ooh, I love jeans! And you! And the Gap! (And possibly the s’mores bars, despite never haing tried them!) I’d love to be entered, please. :)

  28. Metalia says:

D’oh! HAVING, not “haing.” I’m clearly overexcited at the prospect of s’mores bars. (Obviously, this doesn’t count as an entry, but TYPING ERRORS GIVE ME HIVES.)

  29. Carolyn says:

I’d love to find skinny jeans that fit right!

  30. Kelly of MD says:

I am a jean-lover. I think I wear jeans 95% of the time. $50 could come in handy.

  31. jcristg says:

    Y’all are too cute!

  32. Lyndsey says:

yay jeans, i could use some new jeans :)

  33. Brooke says:

Yes! I’m so glad that the jeans fit the tall girls, I have such a hard time with finding jeans that are long enough and Gap is one of the few places I can. I can’t wait to try on the new line.

  34. Leslie says:

Would love to be able to find jeans that fit me. I have the long skinny legs but my hips/waist are about the same size. So straight up and down and women’s pants are always too huge in the hips!! Sigh. I guess we all seem to have FIT issues!

  35. Andi says:

I am ALWAYS looking for jeans that work, by stand-by are always from Gap. I am totally checking out this new line! Going to mention this giveaway as well on my blog, will ping you when I do! Pics are great and it does look like the jeans really work for everyone. I just got my Flip too, starting to practice!

  36. I am a total jeans girl and I need cute maternity jeans! :)

  37. Kristabella says:

    Looks like a fun party!

Gap jeans are one of the few that come lone enough that I can wear heels with my jeans!

  38. Chelsea says:

Count me in..! And you certainly rocked the skinnies.. they look great.

  39. I want I want I want!
But…the Canadian thing might mean no for me.

    Stupid Canada.

  40. Angella says:

Those Brand About Town people are all sorts of sweet – they gave me one of those t-shirts when I was in Chicago.

Wish I could have been at your party ;)

  41. Jess says:

Ooh, awesome! Gap jeans were the first ones I ever found that were actually long enough for my freakishly long legged self. You all look amazing!

  42. I’m always trying to wear Gap jeans. But my problem is sort of the opposite of yours — I’m built a lot like a guy on the lower half – straight waist and narrow hips. So when jeans fit me in the waist (I prefer lower rise to alleviate this problem), they look like English riding pants in the hips. If they fit in the hips, they crush my waist. SO, this would be a great way to give Gap another try.

Aren’t friends just the best gift on earth?

A pastry chef that’s a size 0 should be fired. LOL

  43. rosalicious says:

Looks fun! Like you, I’m not a jeans girl. And I’ve YET to be swayed to the skinny jeans side. But hey, Gap has cute skirts?!

  44. Jenny says:

I love the Gap and I could use a new pair of jeans. Enter me.

  45. Mary H. says:

    I heart GAP jeans!

  46. Caitlin says:

I’ve always had the same gripe about jeans – they are not usually cut for a woman’s shape – ie. wide hips and a narrow waist. Gap is actually my jeans brand of choice because their jeans actually fit me! Plus they have different lengths so I can buy short and not have to roll up my jeans. (It’s slightly irritating that I have to buy ‘short’ when I’m actually average height, but I guess it’s not what’s on the label that counts). I’ve not tried the Born to Fit style before but I know Gap do good jeans so I’m sure they’re great. I’d love the voucher, needless to say!

  47. Meaghan says:

Gap is almost the only place I can buy jeans that fit any more. Love the reviews these jeans are getting & love your blog!

  48. I have a similar problem with jeans because of my disproportionate body. Free jeans would be suuuuuper! :)

  49. hillary says:

Your party looks like it was so fun! I have a similar jeans problem – my waist is small and my hips/butt/thighs are not. It makes my heart sad.

  50. Cassie says:

I am currently DROOLING over a pair of jeans at Gap. I saw them just the other week while shopping with a friend. They are out of my price range…but with a $50 gift card – PERFECTION!! :)

  51. Katie says:

    I’ve gotta try those jeans!

  52. mjb says:

    Love me some gap jeans!

  53. joan van velsor says:

You look good in anything, but the jeans DO look fabulous. What a fun party that looks like.
    love ya

  54. CarolineK says:

Hey hey! So, I mentioned this over on the blog, but seriously… I am loving loving the new Gap jeans. Seriously. Amazing.

  55. OH wow, sounds like you all had a blast and found something for everyone. That’s amazing.

  56. Tami says:

Awww this is great! Sounds like you had a fun time!
I would LOVE winning! Who doesn’t LOVE new jeans?!

  57. Sara P. says:

What a great prize! I LOVE jeans and would love to try these. Thanks for the chance to win!

  58. Natalie says:

i need some gap jeans! they look fab on all of you! thanks for the giveaway!

  59. Kaleigha says:

    Oooh pick me!

I got a FREE! pair of the skinnies from the Brand About Town folks through BlogHer and I WANT MORE. The bootcuts fit exactly like Seven for All Mankind jeans. GAP has really out done themselves. Also, you look hawt.:)

  60. Sarah says:

Okay I bought a pair of Always Skinny the week they came out as a result of a recommendation from a lady working at Banana Republic. I never look good in skinny jeans and these actually fit! Gap may be on to something with this new line!

  61. dani says:

I loved their jeans a long long time ago and then they stopped fitting, which made me super sad because they are so inexpensive! I went back a couple of weeks ago and grabbed two pairs of their jeans and they are so super comfortable and flattering. I haven’t tried on the new line, but I have high hopes for them.

Those jeans look amazing on you. Hopefully they keep you warm in the colder climes.

  62. There are so many cute things at the Gap, and $50 would help a lot!

  63. Stephanie says:

I love Gap jeans, they are pretty much the only kind i wear!

  64. judi says:

oooh free jeans?! that’s awesome :-)

  65. Jennifer says:

a jeans party! sounds fabulous! I’ve never bought Gap jeans before, but I will definitely have to visit my local store to try these on – I’m intrigued. thanks for doing the giveaway!

  66. Shelly says:

I found your blog through Cheaper Than Therapy and whaddya’ know, a giveway! (In all seriousness, I’m excited for a new blog to read!)
I TOTALLY know what you mean about jeans fitting properly. I am not as slender as you are, but have thin and LONG legs. It’s even hard finding 36″ inseams. I have never worn jeans from The Gap (since I pretty much have given up on searching for jeans) and if they are what you say they are, it’s worth checking out The Gap, EVEN if I don’t have a $50.00 gift card. :)

  67. HollyLynne says:

OOH! That party looks like WAY TOO MUCH FUN! Jealous of your new jeans! :)

  68. Marisol says:

Will I be disqualified if I also entered via another blog (Moose in the Kitchen)? I’m crossing my fingers that I won’t be ’cause lord knows I could use some new jeans.

  69. Christina says:

I agree with marisol…I just entered on Moose in the Kitchen as well, but wow, do I need new jeans. So I’ll be shameless and enter twice.

  70. Cindy says:

I would love to win a new pair of jeans… and some of those chocolate chip cookies! ;)

  71. I looove my new jeans! (And I’ll love them even more once I get them hemmed — my legs are definitely not worth of a Long!)

Totally agree with Kaleigha that they fit like Sevens — at a fraction of the price. (Well, or totally free if you’re friends with awesome people like you.)

Thanks again for a wonderful party!

  72. Nicole says:

I have athletic thighs, therefore when I try on skinny jeans, I end up looking like I’m about two feet tall. I would love to find a pair that work!

  73. Leah says:

They are indeed magical jeans. Magic, I tell you!

  74. Kristen says:

I’ve heard great things about thenew Gap jeans! They look fantastic, can’t wait to try them!

  75. Alexandra says:

I need to get to gap stat! I hate shopping for jeans and the search for the elusive perfect pair is a never-ending quest, but this post has left me inspired! Would love the $50 gift certificate as well :)

  76. zmama says:

I need a new pair of jeans!! fingers crossed!

  77. Katie says:

I am always up for a great pair of traveling jeans!

  78. Miss E says:

You are too cute, what a fun party! I *must* try these jeans, and I thought I’d never say (write?) this but I have to check out those skinny jeans! They look fab on you. Maybe GAP Born to Fit is what I’ve needed to try all along!

  79. Jen says:

Do they fit short people too? I’m 5 feet tall, and the petite sizes are always still a few inches too long on me!

  80. Jen says:

I cannot imagine finding a skinny jean that would ever look good on me, but you’ve given me hope!

  81. Steph says:

You all look so adorable in your new jeans! Those skinny jeans on you = amazing!

  82. i need me some skinny jeans. love the video, just a reminder now that I need a pedicure.

  83. Terry says:

I wanna try these jeans…! tell me how you end up liking the other ones you bought/will buy.

  84. Kelly says:

There are definitely some things at GAP.com that I am coveting now. I wish I looked that good in jeans!

  85. Rebecca says:

Too cute! While I am not a big fan of the skinny jeans it seems that is what all the women here in Spain wear in the winter (with kneehigh boots over the jeans) I am still a bootcut fan that I love sporting with my pointy toe boots! And I LOVE Gap jeans!

  86. maria says:

awesome giveaway. and i love GAP! :) thank you!

  87. Andi says:
  88. Maxie says:

i’d LOVE to win the gift card. I’m totally in love with my gap straight jeans.

  89. Mandi says:

I never wear jeans. Ever. For the same reason as you – I just can never find a pair that fits. I’ll have to go to Gap & try on some of the Born to Fit jeans because they do look like they fit everyone well.

I hope they fit me, too – I miss wearing jeans, that is all I wore pre-baby. Now I feel as though I’ll have to go to a tailor to get a good pair of jeans for my body type, and a new mom doesn’t have that kind of money! LoL

  90. Jilian says:

Looking forward to trying these out. I’m built like you and the *only* jeans that fit me are Lucky Easy Riders. I mean it’s great to find a pair that fit… but at $100 a pop – it hurts the wallet. Plus I have NO variety in my closet! :)

  91. Shannon says:

Sign me up for that chance!! The skinnies look fabulous on you and congrats on finding a pair that you love. I personally love jeans and even made sure to let them weigh down my pack on my current trip!

I am twittering this now so others have a shot! :-)

  92. Ava Pierce says:

What a great reason for a party (not that we girls ever need a real reasons)! Thanks for this giveaway because I so need a new pair of jeans and these look fantastic!

  93. kat says:

ooh i like the jeans! i of course could always use another pair…even though i have like 10 pairs already.

  94. regan says:

I’m with you in thinking that Rock & Republic and other luxury jeans just don’t fit right. I’ve tried many styles, brands, cuts, etc and none were good. I happen to be hopelessly in love with Gap’s Long and Lean jeans so I can’t wait to try their new line of denim.

  95. Lisa says:

This would be the perfect time to win a new pair of jeans, as I have finally worn through the knees of my favorite pair. Those look like great jeans, I can’t wait to head to the Gap and give them a try. Thanks for the chance to enter!

  96. Sharon says:

Wow…a lot of entries here….we all want free jeans!

But jeans that fit this good…really does sounds too good to be true. My body is like yours, although I am shorter, I’m sure. But if I get something to fit over my thighs (and I don’t think I have thunder thighs) and stomach (that is a less than desirable size) then it definitely is too big in the waist and inevitably in the butt. And even when they do fit…I find they usually make my butt look bad. I’ve even conceded that I will always have to hem my pants, so I don’t worry about that….but I hate paying so much for jeans, then having to alter them completely only to find they’re not all that still.

I hope these jeans are the real McCoy….and I find it strange that as a Gap cardholder I didn’t get any information about them if they are so fab.

  97. Alyce says:

I don’t want to in, but did want to say that the jeans look great on you. Rockin’!

  98. Alyce says:

That should have said, “I don’t want to win.”

  99. BC says:

Wow, I was just looking through my closet and thought I needed new jeans. I hope I win! BTW, I always thought you have the cutest dresses!

  100. How cute you all are! I have often looked at your photos and thought about how I fear dresses (I don’t even own one), I live in my Levi’s. Funny that you fear jeans, but no more. Hugs from Hundewanderer.

  101. lh says:

I have to wear jeans to work. I’d love a pair that I actually feel like fit me.

  102. Christen says:

I love your flair for rocking dresses in a casual, fun way. Would it be crazy to admit that I have taken some inspiration from you, a total stranger, in that area? Well, OK, I’m crazy.

Anyway, I am ALWAYS on the hunt for good jeans (short but curvy) and am excited to check out the Gap, even if I don’t win the gift card!

  103. Christine says:

Jeans addict here – I’d love to win!

  104. Gaby says:

Oooooh, I need new jeans so badly! I would love to win the gift card. Thanks for the chance.

  105. Looks like I need to head to the mall and try them out. :)

  106. ali says:

seriously, I need to be invited to a party like this. do they not have brand enthusiasts in Atlanta…my god!

also? you look SOOOOOOO good in jeans, lady!

  107. Diane says:

Wow, what a cool thing to do…give away jeans! Also really enjoyed your Norway/Ellen post :-) Diane

  108. Janet McK says:

    I love GAP!

  109. Ellen says:

You look just GEORGEOUS, honey!! What I wouldn’t do to have one of those….I’m in!!! And if you ever need more test-runners, I’ll be the first one to jump into my car from LA:) That said, you all look like models! YAY!
    -ellen

  110. Lydie Thomas says:

My H&M pair of Jeans is completely destroyed, I need a new pair! Gap here I come!
    Lydie

  111. Jenina Smith says:

Gap used to make my favorite pair of jeans – the curvy fit! But they changed the pockets last year and it ruined everything! I would love to try the Born to Fit!

  112. Lydia says:

Me! Pick me, please! My favorite pair of jeans from Banana Republic are showing wear and tear, and I’m so sad because they make petite me look tall and skinny. Not an easy feat!

  113. As a fellow world traveler, I am delurking to say how much I enjoy reading your posts and viewing your photos.
Great contest giveaway, I twittered about it.

  114. Samantha says:

I would love to be able to try these jeans! I’m heard such great things from a bunch of people. :-D Thanks for the opportunity to get my hands on (and my butt in) a pair!

  115. Kerri Anne says:

That party looks like it was so! much fun. Here’s to hot ladies, hot jeans, and hot giveaways, amen.

  116. Christine says:

These jeans look amazing! I must try them :)
Can I get extra points because I’d be wearing my to Shanghai next week? :)

  117. Kate says:

I have similar problems with jeans and am delighted to hear that the Gap might be the answer to my denim dilemma. Thanks for the giveaway!

  118. Breanne says:

I would LOVEEEE to get a $50 gift cerificate for Gap. AND the jeans look totaly fab!!!!

  119. Emily says:

My first visit to your blog, and I love it! I’ve never been much of a jeans kinda girl either, but you make it seem like you’ve finally found some that have some potential =)

  120. Melissa says:

Flattering skinny jeans? Surely you jest. I’m the proud owner of not one, but two pair of ill-fitting, unflattering, banned-to-the-bottom-drawer skinny jeans. I would LOVE to own a pair that don’t make me want to staple my mouth shut.

  121. I almost missed this..or did I just miss this? I hope it’s still Aug 14, Friday your time!! I love Gap jeans and the $50 would help! :-)

    You all look fab, btw.

  122. Anne in SC says:

So – who won the coveted gift card?
I just asked Moose the same question too.
